WY Coach & Leader Bursary

This scheme has been created to encourage and support the personal and professional development of coaches and leaders working in West Yorkshire through subsidising the cost of National Governing Body qualifications.

The aims of the scheme are to:

  • Increase participation in sport.
  • Increase the number of active qualified leaders and coaches in the County.
  • Support entry into coaching and leadership for volunteers recruited through the national Sport Makers initiative.

Priority will be given to those who:

  • Are coaching or leading adult participation activities (aged 16+).
  • Are coaching or leading as volunteers in the community.
  • Coaches and leaders who meet the criteria above and who are from under represented groups in coaching: women, black and ethnic minorities and disabled people.

Eligible individuals:

Funding is available to Sport Makers and Coaches as follows:

 Sport Makers

  • Registered Sport Makers who wish to progress into coaching or leadership as part of, or after their initial 10 hours Sport Makers volunteering, can apply for funding to undertake a National Governing Body leadership or first level coaching award.

Coaches

  • Individuals who are actively coaching but do not hold the relevant National Governing Body Level 1 qualification may apply for funding to support them to gain this level of coaching qualification.
  • Level 1 Coaches who have identified a need to progress to the next level National Governing Body qualification may apply for funding to support them to gain a NGB Level 2 coaching qualification.

Additionally:

  • Coaches or Sport Makers must be actively coaching or leading, or have activities planned. These will benefit local communities or support the development of sport specific player pathways (for example within a sports club, NGB pathway or sports development programme).
  • All applicants must live within or be coaching / leading activities in West Yorkshire
  • Both paid and voluntary coaches are eligible to apply for funding, however paid coaches will be required to show that funding is not available through their employer.

Eligible Qualifications:

  • National Governing Body Level 1 and 2 Coach Qualifications
  • Recognised National Governing Body Leadership Awards.

What can NOT be funded?

Bursaries can not be awarded if the application is received once the qualification has started.

The Scheme will only fund qualification costs and fees. It will not fund additional modules (e.g. first aid and safeguarding), accommodation or any other associated expenses or costs.

Funding Available

Coaches and leaders will be able to apply for a maximum of 50% of the total cost of qualifications. This is up to a maximum of £100 for Leadership Awards and Level 1 Coach qualifications, and a maximum of £200 for Level 2 Coach qualifications.

The maximum grant that can be awarded to coaches or leader from one organisation (e.g. club) in any year is £500.
